Time to consider ANWR…again

With gas prices at almost $4 per gallon, it may again be time to debate drilling for oil in ANWR.  The oil found in the ANWR region of Alaska could dramatically influence the price of gas.  This along with offshore drilling are sure to be on the congressional agenda to debate in the coming year.  American’s everywhere are struggling to pay their bills, and this is made even more difficult with the raising cost of energy.  Energy poverty is a pressing problem, not just in the third world, but in our own country.

From what I remember from the last ANWR debate, the Alaskan pipeline is only good as long as the oil is flowing.  The pipeline remains sealed as long as the oil flows.  Once the pipeline runs dry, there is a great risk of wholes and cracks forming in it, and it is not possible to to use the pipeline any longer.  Once this happens, an entirely new pipeline must be built in order to transport the oil.  It is likely that as some point we will drill in ANWR, if for nothing other than necessity.  If the pipeline is dry, then the we would need to use vast resources, including land, to transport it. If, however, we drill now, we would only have to build a pipeline far enough to connect with the existing one, 60 miles.  Ultimately this will cost us less in time, money, and the environment to drill now.
